Supporting Local and Global Causes
"There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed.''
Albert Scwietzer
An important part of depening our yoga practice is to reach beyond the mat and the walls of the studio and begin to take the insight and space gained from our practice and serve others. Within the yoga tradition, the word for this is Seva: selfless service for altruistic purposes on behalf of, and for the betterment of a Community.
Savannah Power Yoga is committed to taking the power of the practice into our local community and beyond. In 2012, this will be done at a local and global level.
Local Outreach
Each quarter we will work with one local community organization to raise awareness and funds to help support their cause. You, the students at SPY, will select the organization that we support each quarter through an online Facebook poll. Join SPY's Facebook page and stay on top of the latest news and let your voice be heard.
Our first quarter 2012 beneficiary was COPE. COPE's mission is to combat childhood obesity with a threefold approach - nutrition education, fitness and behavioral health. Together we raised $1375 for COPE! Thank you!
Our Second Quarter Organization is the Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire. The Rape Crisis Center was established as a comprehensive agency serving Savannah and the surrounding area. Each year, the Rape Crisis Center reaches approximately 700 victims including adults, child victims, and family members of victims. Their crisis intervention programs now include SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) and SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners), which makes the reporting process much more responsive to the victim. An additional 15,000 people are reached each year with the various prevention programs for all ages, such as Good Touch/Bad Touch, Bullying Prevention, Rape Awareness, and self defense classes.
Global Outreach

The Africa Yoga Project's mission is to use the transformative benefits of yoga to empower vulnerable communities in Kenya. The project is based in the Kibera slums of Nairobi, which house close to 1 million people, with little access to safe water or sanitation. Disease is prevalent, while schools and job opportunities are scarce. For many youth petty crime and gangs become a means of survival. Africa Yoga Project offers free yoga classes and provides teacher training and financial support to young people who want to teach yoga in their communities.
Kate has been selected as an ambassador to AYP and will be heading to Kenya to learn about the power of yoga to transform communities. Her hope is bring the lessons learned from that experience back to Savannah and support the vulnerable communities in our own backyard. We will be hosting a special fundraising class for AYP on MArch 31st. Stay tuned for details.
